Straight-backed and upright rather than reclined, Cavendish is the woven teak chair for places you sit at rather than sit in - a desk, the end of a dining table, a hallway where a lounge chair would sprawl.

The seat and back are woven rattan set into a teak frame, so it stays light and lets air through. At 83 centimetres it is the taller of our two woven teak chairs, and it comes in four finishes at one price.

How upright is it?

Straight-backed rather than reclined, and at 83 cm high it is the taller of our two woven teak chairs. That makes it better suited to a desk, a dining end or a hallway than to an evening in front of a television - for that, a slanted back would suit you more.

Is the seat cane or rattan?

The maker uses both words - its specification says rattan wicker and its written description says cane. They are closely related and in furniture the terms are often used loosely, so it is not a contradiction so much as imprecision. What the photographs show is a woven seat and back panel. We have asked which term is technically correct.

Is the teak recycled?

The maker describes it as sustainably recycled teak in its prose and as seasoned old teak in its specification. Those are their words, not ours, and we have not been shown a source, an age or a certification - so we repeat them as claims made by the maker rather than as facts we can stand behind. If provenance matters to your purchase, ask us and we will pursue it.

How do I look after the woven seat?

Brush the weave rather than wiping it, and keep it dry. Direct sun lightens woven rattan faster than the teak framing it, so a chair sitting half in a window will drift out of tone. Lift it by the frame, never by the woven back. The maker specifies indoor use only.
